| | | | Kwalapa Organic Wholefoods Deli, store and eco-pod So - it was about two years ago that I discovered carrots do not grow in a week. Add to that the fact that they like to be starved, otherwise they lose the 'car'root bit and turn out to a bunch of well dispersed roots! Such is the weird world of... them things that aren't human, but also like to live on the planet. And that's also why, while I write, others grow, and I'm still fascinated by what comes out. This week: - Featured organic fare - yum
- Camphill Village - Biodynamic Farm
- RAW RAW RAW - Wednesday
- Music under the trees - Makwerhu - Thursday
- Our Weekly delivery schedule
Featured organic fare Our Kwalapa store is GROWING... in ways i understand. We've got some wonderful products on the shelves we'd like to highlight Reel Gardening pre-fertilised seed strips - this is a fantastic product for the nouveau gardener (me), those with limited time, and pretty much anyone who is interested in a little help in getting the veggie patch in order. to use their own words: "Reel Gardening is a pre-fertilised seed strip that encases seeds in biodegradable paper. The strips indicate the correct depth that the seeds should be buried with a coloured line and the seeds are placed at the correct distance apart from one another inside the strips. Each strip is colour coded e.g. Tomato is red, Beetroot is purple etc." I'm testing them myself - yup, hands in the dirt and all. KlicketyKlik Boxes - Once was a coke-bottle, now a gift box. Such a cool idea - reducing landfill, repurposing - one up from recycling. You'll find them waiting to be 'uplifted' from the shelves at Kwalapa by you. Camphill Village Farm - Biodynamic Farm Happy Cows, chickens that really are proper 'free range', fields treated with as much respect as one's own garden. And all this on an estate that assists and provides a home for people with disabilities. This is one place worth getting on the horsebox for. At Kwalapa, we're delighted to have some of their fantastic high quality cheeses & yoghurts on our shelves, but a trip out to the estate is also well recommended. And Biodynamic ? If you're looking to get involved in a mission for life, this would be a good place to start. Treating the farm as a living 'whole', translates into working with respect, starting with the soil we stand on, right through to the final packaged farm produce. 'Organic' farming is a no-brainer when your basic principles rest in creating a complete healthy ecosystem - both physically and on a wider spiritual level. We've now organised the feast on a 'per weight' basis, so you can sample/indulge to your liking. Our Silwood trained chef & proprietor-ress Emily Moya is a convert. Now, for an ex-zimbabwean cattle & tobacco farmer, that's seriously impressive. Three piece band - Makwerhu are becoming our regular Thursday guests. Might be the light playing tricks on me, but I swear the trees get a little jiggy when these guys fire up. Makwerhu serves up laid-back traditional African style grooves with influences of jazz, funk, kwela, mbaqanga and maskandi 12.30pm - 3.30pm (iish) Mike Makhbele- Vocals and guitar Devin Howell- Bass guitar Byron Howell - Drums Entrance is free, tho if you enjoy the music, there's a box on the counter which helps pay the school fees.
