About Kwalapa
|
 |
|
"If
food could speak,
what would it say to us?
It would tell us about its friends,
who’s cared for it, carried it around, the things it saw along the
way,
the places it visited,
the people who raised it,
its ancestry and its dreams."

KWALAPA [Xhosa
trans: LOCAL] is an organic wholefoods store, deli and food design
centre that’s out to make a difference. The food we prepare and sell is
wholesome organic produce, but we’re looking to go beyond the
obvious.
We speak to those who are interested in eating healthily and living in
balance with the world around them.
We’re 'locavores' to the core – unless it can’t be found in the
surrounds, we’ll bring to you produce from the local farmer or studio –
food miles in the double digits, keeping the carbon footprint way down
low.
We want to support the growth of urban agriculture. Through the
Kwalapa Development Initiative, we’re getting actively involved in the
development of high quality community/urban organic
farming. |
|
| With the
eco-pod, in store and online we’ll be introducing you to the people
who’ve put their passion and their lives into growing, chopping,
sorting, slicing and shipping the produce we provide. It’s a tale of
humans, living and working in recognition of their roles in a much
greater story – not necessarily top of the log, rather, pieces within a
puzzle that makes up life. |
|
 |
| We’re carrying
through the concept of design into food itself. That’s design not just
in the look, but cradle-to-cradle, the taste, the nutrition, what was
used to create it, where it goes after us and, the effect it has on
us. |
|
|
If
you’d like to be involved in any way, or want to know more,
we’re wide open to discussion – let us know.
|
| At
Kwalapa you’ll find: |
 |
 |
Delicious organic wholefoods freshly prepared daily. The deli serves a
range of meals from lights breakfasts to full lunches.
Every Wednesday for lunch, Proprietor'ess' Emily Moya prepares a RAW
food feast of unusually but tasty vegetarian fare.
And for those who don’t quite see the beauty in a split pea, the menu
is fleshed out with a range of home bakes, cakes, and wheat free breads
accompanied by a selection of teas, fantastic organic coffees and fresh
juices.
So, if you'd like to experience an eatery created by people passionate
about food and committed to a sustainable lifestyle, join us at Kwalapa
we'd love to welcome you.

Talking about ‘how to live sustainably / go
green / make a difference' is one thing, doing it is another. The store
provides the actual products to make that change.
You’ll find a range of fresh fruit, vegetables, dried goods, jams,
sauces, packaged health foods, supplements and eco-friendly cleaners.
The store environment in all ways reflects health and
balance. |
|
 |
 |
Become a
conscious consumer.
Through signage, labelling, and a range of books and dvd's available
in-store, Kwalapa speaks to visitors about our role in the ecological
world as both givers and consumers. You can browse through some
fascinating books while you’re giving your body a detox with an organic
meal or you can take them home for a more in-depth
read. |
|
| In the
traditions of our land, we gather under a tree to learn. We’re looking
to actively grow the community of people who are interested in the
‘going green’ movement. We’ll be presenting speakers, workshops and
lectures in all areas of how to live green. Enjoying a good meal is a
starting point, but at Kwalapa we’re aiming to become a centre for
learning, a place where, if you want to know about all things organic,
we’ll be providing the venue, knowledge and solutions for
you. |

“We exist to make a change. In the
way we interact with our world.
In the way we feed and are fed by our world.
In the way we grow the food that sustains us.
In the way we give back to a world that gives us life.”
